KNYSNA NEWS - Knysna’s deputy mayor, Morton Gericke, was recently presented with a cheque of R180 000 by MEC Ricardo Mackenzie of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS).
This funding forms part of DCAS’ ongoing commitment to fostering community engagement and empowering youth through sport and recreation.
The cheques were presented to the mayors and deputy mayors of the municipalities in the Garden Route region. The beneficiaries included Mossel Bay, Knysna, George and Hessequa.
According to Mackenzie, sports and cultural festivals play an important role in community development.
“The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport believes in the power of sports and cultural festivals to create jobs, grow tourism and stimulate local economies, especially in our smaller towns,” he said.
The total amount made available to the five municipalities is R620 000.
“We are proud to support these regions as they prepare to host exciting events that bring people together and promote economic development,” Mackenzie said.
