SEDGEFIELD NEWS - Two people, a 42-year-old mother and her four-year-old-son, succumbed in a house fire in Karatara in the early hours of today Saturday 7 June.
The blaze started at about 06:00 in Akkerlaan, Karatara.
Two survivors who were also in the house, Gert de Lange and Werner Kleinhans, had to watch helplessly for more than an hour as they awaited the arrival of fire engines.
Coincidently this tragedy happened on the same day the Knysna Fires was commemorated.
SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Christopher Spies confirmed the deaths of a woman and a boy in the fire.
He said an inquest docket was opened after two bodies were retrieved from debris at Ackerlaan, Karatara on Saturday, 07 June 2025 at about 06:45.
“Preliminary reports available suggest that police were dispatched to the scene where a house was on fire. On arrival they found the premises on fire. “The bodies of the victims, believed to be a woman and boy, were found under debris.'
Spies said the cause of the fire is yet to be established.
