KNYSNA NEWS - Bikers are a different breed altogether. We love poetry in motion, and to sling into a sweep. Bikers do it with motion!
These writings are meant purely for bikers and related activities to be published here on a regular basis such as goings-on namely outrides on- and off-road.
Mention is made of gatherings and events, rallies, day jols, toy runs and community support. Any related information may be forwarded to eezeerida@gmail.com.
What we biker junkies enjoy the best of all is just to ride. It does not matter whether it is on or off-road or in the bundu.
Herewith follows some information on a variety of riding opportunities and contact info if you would like to participate. All these groups of riders welcome fresh wheels to join them. Not so fresh is also welcome, of course.
Not so fresh? Don't worry
On the subject of not-so-fresh things, the Garden Route has a variety of classic bikes of all kinds. Most of them still run as well as when they were newbies. Contact Bill on 072 444 8248.
Classic bike riders try to get it together once a month. Mostly the third Sunday, then the Plett and Knysna and Sedgies crowd all end up at one place.
Some take a bit longer than others, but they do their best. Bless these oldies because they brought us today’s modern bikes.
An interesting display of classic bikes and others are available at the Bike museum on Thesen Island.
So, if you get to Knysna Caltex garage on Waterfront Drive early Sunday morning before 09:00, there will be plenty riding to do with tar and dual-purpose travels.
It is the favourite day for biker junkies to get their fix and ride from everywhere to anywhere.
Adventurers
The Adventurers, a group of dual-purpose bikers, get together there. It's easy to spot their bikes – mostly GS or similar bikes. New riders welcome. Contact Paul on 072 921 7953 for updates and upcoming events.
The blacktop huggers also meet there the same time. Their machines are also easy to spot.
The Syndicate Garden Route club
Based in Knysna, riders also meet at Caltex Waterfront on Sundays and they do a monthly evening ride to a selected venue. For further information contact Ray on 082 565 0258.
All bike junkies gather there. You are bound to meet someone with whom to ride to somewhere.
Harley riders
Further afield, the Harley riders also gather in groups and meet up somewhere, and for info speak to Roelof on 082 575 2736 or gardenrouteclassictourer@gmail.com where you can rent Harleys and also get guided tours.
Ulysses Garden Route
While on the subject of travelling along the Garden Route, and oldies, Ulysses Garden Route springs to mind. Note their motto: “Grow old disgracefully”. All over 40s may join, and for friendly rides, all are welcome. Contact Eddie on 072 101 8257.
The Ulysses Garden Route PAWS Run 2017 is happening in George this Sunday 24 September at Die Bosvarkie. Riders will meet at 11:00 at Checkers Redefine Boulevard, York Street, where pet food and products will be available at discounted prices from Checkers.
A mass ride will start at 12:00 and proceed directly to Die Bosvarkie on the old airport road.
There are super prizes, a lucky draw, a presentation, fun competition and lots of great food stalls, and badges will be available at R30.
More info: Paul 082 697 3388 or Eddie 072 101 8257.
Hornlee bikers
Here in Knysna, we have the Hornlee bikers. They also feel life is simply better on two wheels, and have regular rides on weekends and everyone is welcome. Speak to Shane on 076 792 0769.
Plett riders
Plenty bikers in Plett, speak to Fred and organise a ride. Contact Fred on 083 737 4707.
Knysna Pleasure Bikers
For those unfortunates who cannot ride on Sundays, there is hope for you because on Wednesday mornings a group of bikers do a blacktop trip. Knysna Pleasure Bikers do it on Wednesday because they can. Also about 09:00 at Caltex Waterfront. Mostly mellow trips and all bikers welcome. Talk to Hendrik on 083 462 3118.
All of these groups of bikers have a WhatsApp group where you can be added for you to stay on top of the goings-on.
Springbok Rally
An event in our valley is the Springbok Rally in Oudtshoorn from 29 September to 1 October.
Venue is De Hoek Mountain Resort. It is organised by Nomads.
Food and camping and trade stalls, lots of prizes for young and old, great music and entertainment, cheap cash bar, concourse and games, big screen also available.
For the adventure riders, a trip into Die Hel for lunch on Saturday arranged by Kevin van Blerk. Contact Nomads on 082 559 7729 or see the website www.nomads.org.za, or the Facebook page Springbok Rally.
If you're not a biker and still reading, you must be a motorist. Well, we have a message for you: bikers ride with our headlights on for a reason – so that you can see us! We are difficult to see because we take up less space than you.
Please keep a look-out for us, as we do for you…
Bikers tips and advice are welcome here. For instance, if you have trouble on the side of the road, place your helmet on the ground behind your bike. It is the universal “Help!” sign. Then the rest of us know you are not just having a smoke break.
Now get out there and go and have your fix. – Pieter Muller
