EDEN DISTRICT NEWS - Eden District Municipality (EDM) has added another feather to its cap after being awarded, for the third consecutive year, as the overall winner in the Greenest District Municipalities Competition, walking away with R130 000.

 

The winners were announced by the Western Cape Government MEC of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Anton Bredell on Monday, 2 November at the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West.

 

The following categories were won by EDM:

• Waste Management (Mr Morton Hubbe, Manager: District Solid Waste Management)
• Air quality (Dr Johan Schoeman, Manager: District Air Quality Control)
• Water conservation (Mr Vernon Gibbs-Halls, Specialist: Environmental Management)
• Climate Change (Mr Vernon Gibbs-Halls, Specialist: Environmental Management)
• Environment and Coastal Management (Mr Vernon Gibbs-Halls, Specialist: Environmental Management)
• Leadership and Compliance (Mr Clive Africa, Executive Manager: Community Services and Mr Johan Compion, Manager: Municipal Health and Environmental Services)
  

Mr Hubbe, Dr Schoeman and Mr Gibbs-Halls report directly to Mr Johan Compion, Manager: Municipal Health and Environmental Services, who provided continuous support to his section's efforts of changing the environment to improve the lives of communities. Cllr Henry Mc Combi, Portfolio Chairperson: Community Services, also attended the event and congratulated the officials for their hard work and setting the bar for other municipalities in and around the Western Cape.

"We would like to thank all officials from EDM for their collective effort, prioritisation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and excellent service delivery," said the Executive Manager of Community Services, Mr Clive Africa.

The Municipal Manager of EDM, Mr Godfrey Louw, said: "The prize money will be shared amongst the various disciplines with the aim on advancing and advocating sustainable development in the district".
