KNYSNA NEWS - The family of 10-year-old Mahlubandile ‘Mahlubi’ Mbombo, who died in a house fire earlier this month, are experiencing unspeakable grief after the passing of his father, Mzwandile ‘Shuta’ Magadla, last night, 20 May.
Magadla, who sustained severe burn wounds to his face and hands while desperately trying to rescue his son from a house fire in Sanlam, Nekkies, on 11 May, had been receiving treatment in the intensive care unit at George Hospital.
According to relatives, Magadla repeatedly rushed back into the burning house calling out his son’s name after realising the child was still trapped inside. Community members described his actions as heroic as he risked his own life in an attempt to save the Grade 3 learner.
The tragedy unfolded during a power outage affecting the area. It is alleged that the family had been preparing dinner using a gas stove when an explosion occurred, igniting the fire.
Authorities, however, have not yet officially confirmed the exact cause of the blaze, and an inquest docket remains under investigation by police.
Magadla’s passing comes at an especially trying time as Mahlubi is to be laid to rest today.
