KNYSNA NEWS - On 18 September, a heart-warming event took place as the elderly residents of Vermont Old Age Home were treated to a special outing.
Sponsored by SANParks and the Featherbed Company, the outing aimed to provide the elderly with a unique experience outside the confines of the care facility.
The outing was organised by SANParks, who had visited the centre for Mandela Day, and felt inspired to take the elderly residents on a boat trip. Sister Baveline Peterson, along with dedicated staff members and a board member, accompanied the seniors to ensure their well-being and enjoyment throughout the day.
"For the elderly residents, this outing was an extraordinary experience," says Mark Stevens of Vermont Old Age Home.
"Some had never been on a boat before, let alone on the scenic lagoon. Their faces lit up with joy and excitement as they embarked on the adventure. The skipper and his assistant received heartfelt gratitude from the elderly for their warm hospitality and the unforgettable trip to The Heads."

He said the outing was a reminder of the importance of providing meaningful experiences for the elderly. "Although the activity itself was simple, it had a profound impact on the residents' well-being," he said.
"Engaging in new and fun activities for them helps with feelings of isolation, enhances overall mental health, and fosters a sense of belonging and happiness. Initiatives like these demonstrate that even small gestures can make a significant difference in the lives of the elderly."
Vermont Old Age Home extends its gratitude to SANParks, the Featherbed Company, Oom Harry's taxi services, and the staff members involved in organising this special opportunity for the residents.
Thanks to their generosity and dedication, the seniors have been left with cherished memories.
