KNYSNA NEWS - The lengthy formal bail application of murder accused Mervyn Bock (40) has once again been postponed in the Knysna Magistrate’s Court.
During proceedings on Thursday 12 March, the defence requested that the matter be delayed, informing the court that they were not ready to proceed and required additional time to clarify several outstanding issues in preparation for the bail application. The court granted the request for postponement.
The hearing is now scheduled to resume on Monday 16 March, when Bock’s affidavit and further arguments relating to his bail application are expected to be presented before the court.
Bock stands accused of murdering his former girlfriend, Velia Strydom (39). Her decomposed body was discovered near the Red Bridge just outside Knysna on 12 December. Bock was arrested on 1 January.
During court proceedings over the past month, the investigating officer, Sergeant Diyani, revealed details of the investigation that allegedly link Bock to the crime.
According to testimony presented in court, Diyani uncovered a series of internet searches that Bock allegedly conducted around the time of Strydom’s disappearance. The court also heard about CCTV footage that reportedly traces Bock’s movements during the relevant period. In addition, evidence presented suggested that Strydom may have been strangled.
Bock faces one count of murder and two counts of defeating the ends of justice.
He has remained in custody since his arrest while awaiting the outcome of his bail application.
Both the State and the defence are scheduled to return to court on 27 March, with another appearance set for 31 March. The latter date has been reserved for judgment on the bail application.
