KNYSNA NEWS - The Land of Milk and Honey Animal Sanctuary recently extended a hand of compassion beyond its purview through a community outreach initiative aimed at uplifting animals and easing some of the challenges pet owners in the isolated Keurhoek community face.
The organisation's first-ever outreach project was made possible through the generosity of supporters from near and far. Donations came from local community members, individuals in Cape Town, and even supporters working on oil rigs in Australia. Together, they raised R3 867 to make the initiative possible.
These funds were used to purchase dog and cat pellets, treats and nutritional gravy. The outreach team then travelled to Keurhoek, where they distributed the food and spent time supporting the animals and their owners.
The initiative also benefitted other animal welfare organisations. A portion of the pet food was donated to Sedgefield Animal Matters, while additional supplies were set aside for CX Township Animals in Need, extending the impact of the campaign to several communities.
As its first official community outreach programme, the outreach marked a significant milestone for The Land of Milk and Honey Animal Sanctuary. The organisation hopes it will be the first of many initiatives aimed at supporting animals that are often overlooked.
For many of the animals and their owners, the visit meant more than simply receiving a meal - it was a reminder that they had not been forgotten. The outreach formed part of the sanctuary's broader mission to promote animal welfare beyond its own gates. "We believe that caring for animals means recognising their value wherever they are found - not only within the walls of a sanctuary," said the sanctuary's Tala Obray.
Held in the spirit of Mandela Day, the initiative demonstrated how collective generosity can make a meaningful difference. With more outreach projects already being planned, the sanctuary hopes to continue changing the lives of animals and the communities that care for them, one outreach at a time.
