KNYSNA NEWS - The Knysna Municipality will commence with installation of 7500 water metres in seven wards in Greater Knysna from 11 March. A Service Provider has been appointed for the installations which are expected to take approximately four months to complete.
Technical Services Chairperson, Councillor Levael Davis explained that water metres have been a success in other areas in the Western Cape. “This technology has been rolled out in the Cape Town Metro, Mossel Bay and Theewaterskloof with great success.
“The water management devices have various advantages to the consumers and the municipality. These include, saving water, revenue enhancement, gives clear water usage, decrease the number of disputed accounts, improves the managing and of water resources and assist Council with long term planning.”
“Our indigent household will still receive the 6 kl free per month. The water management devices will be programmed to provide a daily allocation of 200 litres per day and savings will accumulate if not used only on month basis. After this allotted amount the devise will automatically switch on the prepaid system.
“Water is a precious resource. We encourage households to conserve usage and explore advantages of grey water use for other domestic uses such as gardening.”
The water management devices have various advantages to the consumers and the municipality.
Cllr Davis said that the project will create job opportunities for local people. “The contractor will employ approximately 50 people within Greater Knysna and train them. This is not just a great opportunity for employment but for transferring of skills as well for future jobs”.
