GARDEN ROUTE NEWS – Two Grade 10 learners of Outeniqua High School are the proud owners of gold medals, rewarded for their science projects at the provincial leg of the nationwide Eskom Expo for Young Scientists competition.
Marseilles Naudé and Jaco Jacobs both impressed the judges with their innovation. The titles of their projects are respectively: "The use of mechanical energy in the recycling of aluminium cans" and "AIRPC - Automated Inflation Regulated Pressure Control".
The expo live-streamed its annual online Western Cape Provincial Virtual Awards last Thursday, 2 September, on the YouTube platform, and had an exciting 1 267 views.
Amidst all the Covid and curriculum challenges, 24 learners from seven schools submitted 17 exciting projects. Participating schools include Murray High (Plettenberg Bay), Percy Mdala High (Knysna), Outeniqua High (George), Bridgton Secondary (Oudtshoorn), Jonga High (George), Voorwaarts Primary (Riversdal) and Panaroma Primary (Riversdal).

Christlin Ferreira (Grade 10) of Outeniqua High received a Highly Recommended for her project "How different scents can boost the self-confidence of women".
Grade 10 learner Jaco Jacobs of Outeniqua High School received a gold medal for his science project "AIRPC - Automated Inflation Regulated Pressure Control".
Highly recommended
The following learners in the Eden Karoo region received a "Highly Recommended" for their various projects :
Chapman Tasiya and Liyema Mbulawa (Grade 10) of Percy Mdala High with their project "How to transmit sound with a laser provisional"; Christlin Ferreira (Grade 10) of Outeniqua High with her project "How different scents can boost the self-confidence of women"; Manduluve Dayizi (Grade 9) of Jonga High with "Understanding learners' behaviour and human behaviour"; Sisipho Skhotha (Grade 9) of Jonga High with the project "Gender inequality".
Sisipho Skhotha (Grade 9) of Jonga High School received a "Highly Recommended" for her project "Gender Inequality".
Manduluve Dayizi (Grade 9) of Jonga High School in Thembalethu received a "Highly Recommended" for her project "Understanding learners behaviour and human behaviour".
Next step
According to provincial coordinator Sonet Strydom, the next step will be to invite deserving learners to the International Science Fair, which is to take place online in October.
"We are extremely proud of all the learners that entered and wish to congratulate all of the achievers!" she said.
She thanked the expo team, educators, parents, registered judges and the national team, working behind the scenes to provide the only expo science platform where learners can showcase their brilliant ideas.
