KNYSNA NEWS - The Knysna Lakes section of SANParks' Garden Route National Park (GRNP) has introduced another initiative to prevent pollution from entering the Knysna Estuary.
The estuary is a key area of biodiversity, not only in the region, but the country as a whole, as it is considered to be the estuary with the highest biodiversity in South Africa.
In the latest initiative, which was run in partnership with the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (Wessa), bins for discarding fishing lines were placed around Knysna.
"Wessa bought the material for the bins, and SANParks then put the bins together," said Owen Govender, senior marine ranger at the Knysna Lakes section of the GRNP. "The bins are for discarded fish lines; normal litter goes into normal rubbish bins."
The first roll-out of the bins has begun at popular fishing spots in such as the Thesen Islands jetty and on Leisure Isle.
SANParks requests anglers to use the new bins solely to dispose of fishing lines, and not regular litter.
