Rheenendal Primary School principal Sammy Williams said that while he regretted an incident in February when a teacher slapped a nine-year-old girl, he also regretted that this "call for help" had not happened earlier. Following the incident, people outside the relatively isolated village became aware of the immense and rapidly escalating social ills there. Extreme behaviours by very young children with no rolemodels are eating at the very fibre of the school, the caring teachers. Children easily resort to violence, drug use is everywhere, juniors have inappropriate sex talks, they shout and curse and are uncontrollable. A lack of rolemodels and the fact that the school has to cater for learners up to Grade 9 (some of them 16), aggravate the situation. "What they do not learn at home, they learn at school," Williams said. Many interventions, including regular parenting courses, have failed.
Williams said that while the 2011 Rheenendal bus tragedy left scars in the community, the root problems of the community lie much deeper. "It is time to move on."
Ward councillor Eleanore Bouw-Spies said she is very aware of the social ills and that efforts were being made to address the issues. She added, "We can not stop trying."
