KNYSNA NEWS - With taverns and shebeens being a no-go, more and more locals are starting to brew their own beer at home, specifically the trusty old ginger beer – but with a twist, of course.
Some are even selling their homemade ginger beer at as little as R10 a litre.
Home brewer Zuko Maroti told Knysna-Plett Herald that people are now enjoying making their own alcohol with just few affordable ingredients.
"This is easy… All you need is ginger powder, brown sugar, tartaric acid and yeast. The beer tastes nice and you can enjoy it in your house," he said. "The difference between this ginger beer and the original (non-alcoholic) drink is that you put more yeast in it so that it gets ready quickly and gets you drunk," he said, adding that he only makes it for his own use.
While it is illegal to buy or sell any alcohol during the current lockdown regulations, a very happy "new" consumer, known only as Sandile, says he has been buying alcoholic ginger beer wherever he can find it and it costs him far less than what he used to pay for his pre-lockdown favourite Late Harvest wine. "I buy two litres of alcohol at R20 and that is enough for the whole day. I spend less money in a day than buying my usual stuff. I save a lot of money compared to the money I used to spend on alcohol in a day," he said. "This beer is cheap and you don't have to worry about bhabhalaza (a hangover)."
