The aim of the summit was to investigate ways of improving the functioning of ward committees to improve participation and communication with the various communities in the Knysna area.
Bouw-Spies said that ward committee members need to improve communication with their communities. "The ward councillor and the members of the committees are council's link to our various communities. You have to make sure our communities receive information in time and in the correct format. They must be engaged with on a regular basis and to those who cannot read and write, your role is even more important."
Bouw-Spies said that, as the Speaker, she is the guardian of the integrity of the Knysna Council. "I can't be held accountable to build the image of this municipality, but the image of each and every councillor matters. As the ward committees, you are an essential part of this process, which is why I brought this summit together."
