PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Despite having less than a year’s experience under its belt, the Murray High School choir is flying the Bitou flag high and will be attending the provincial school choral championships in Cape Town later this week.
As the Kwanokuthula school is under financial pressure, the 62 choir members need assistance to get there.
The choir is headed by Anelisiwe Getty Mnyaka, who started working at Murray High last year. She has since played an instrumental role in not only establishing the choir, but guiding them to several competition successes over the past few months.
The choir last year won first place at the Eden District school choir regional rounds for their folklore and Afrikaans pieces.
This year they successfully defended those titles and went even further by also winning an award for the best female voice and best conductor. They also took third for their Western piece and quartet.
“In a community that is burdened by growing petty crime, school dropouts and drug abuse, the choir is but one of the many ways to curb all these social ills,” Mnyaka said.
Should anyone wish to assist the choir, donations can be made by depositing funds into the school’s account.
