KNYSNA SCHOOLS NEWS - Percy Mdala High School's Class of 2019 scooped a 100% pass in five subjects: history, consumer studies, English, isiXhosa and life orientation. This contributed to their massive pass rate improvement from 70.9% in 2018 to 82.9%.
The school's principal Nicholas Njozela said they formulated several intervention strategies to ensure they obtain the best results.
He said staff first started tracking the learners' progress from Grade 10 to identify which needed to be focused on more. They not only identified these challenges, but also identified learners that needed extra attention. Njozela said they also formulated a questionnaire to highlight possible stumbling blocks. "This included aspects like the learners' home situation, the socio-economic support they receive and whether their homes are conducive to effective studying," Njozela said.
He said they also had a mentoring system which saw teachers keep a close eye on learners. "This is such a huge improvement and I believe we could've done even better, had it not been for dropouts. We're excited regardless and hope to do even better this year. I'm planning a ceremony for my staff to say 'thank you'and set the tone for this year. These results are a reflection of their hard work and dedication."
Their pass rate for matriculants this year is 82.9% with five distinction holders. The school boasts 35 bachelor passes, 39 diploma and 18 higher certificate passes. Two of their top achievers, Sesona Mahashe (distinction in English and Life Science) and Snovuyo Mpepho (distinction in isiXhosa) were not available to comment.
Asemahle Mafu boasts a distinction (81%) in life orientation.
Siyambonga Nkunzi scooped a distinction in mathematics literacy with 83%.
