KNYSNA | PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - With the festive season getting underway, Covid-19 cases have more than tripled in the Knysna and Bitou sub-districts.
With the country now firmly in the grips of the fourth wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, the ongoing drive to register and vaccinate as many members of the public as possible continues to make progress.
As at Wednesday 15 December, the Western Cape has seen 2 751 464 registrations for the Covid-19 vaccine, 49,02% of the eligible population. In the Garden Route a total of 244 646 people have registered for the vaccine, 49,42% of the eligible population.
In Knysna there has been a total of 34 998 vaccine registrations, which is 60,96% of the eligible population. Bitou has seen a total of 21 253 vaccine registrations, 50,01% of the eligible population.
As at Tuesday 14 December, Knysna had recorded a total of 8 294 cases of Covid-19, of which 7 815 have recovered, 257 have died, and 222 are active cases. The number of new cases this week, 161, is the most Knysna has seen since 7 September.
It represents a rise of 387,61% in new cases.
The active cases also increased sharply, rising to 222 - a 382,61% rise (+176). The recovery rate has dropped to 94,22% (96,27% last week), the lowest percentage since 14 September, while the mortality rate is 3,1%.
In Bitou as at Tuesday, 4 562 Covid-19 cases have been recorded, with 4 220 having recovered, 137 having died, and 205 being active cases. This shows 167 new cases recorded between 7 and 14 December, a 659,09% (+145) increase.
The active cases rose by 425,64% (+166) this week, and is the highest number recorded in Bitou since 21 September. The recovery rate is now 92,50% (96,00% last week), and the mortality rate is 3%.
