GOLF NEWS - The third annual Charity Golf Day hosted by the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) took place at Steenberg Golf Estate in Tokai on Friday, 16 October, bringing together partners, suppliers and supporters to raise funds for Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS) and Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR).
The event attracted 32 fourballs, with 14 waterholes sponsored, helping raise funds for the two organisations, which rely on volunteers to respond to emergencies on and around Table Mountain.
WSAR teams assist lost and injured hikers, often working in challenging weather conditions and on steep terrain. VWS volunteers respond to wildfires, helping protect the mountain's fynbos, wildlife and surrounding communities.
VWS spokesperson Thane Masureik said the contribution would support the organisation as it prepared for the peak fire season.
“Our firefighters are volunteers who train throughout the year so they’re ready the moment a fire breaks out. As we head into the peak fire season, support from TMACC and its partners helps make sure our crews have the gear and training they need to protect the mountain and the communities alongside it,” said Masureik.
TMACC managing director Tracy Mkhize said the organisations played an important role in helping people explore Table Mountain safely.
The funds raised will assist with equipment, training and other resources needed by the volunteer teams.
Hikers urged to prioritise mountain safety
With the summer hiking season approaching, WSAR spokesperson David Nel has urged visitors to plan carefully before setting out on Table Mountain.
Although the mountain is a popular destination, weather conditions can change rapidly, and routes can become challenging for inexperienced hikers.
Nel advised hikers to choose routes suited to their fitness and experience, inform someone of their plans and expected return time, and avoid hiking alone.
Other essential safety precautions include:
- Plan ahead: Research the route, estimate how long the hike will take and tell someone where you are going.
- Hike in a group: Stay together on the trail and avoid hiking alone.
- Save the emergency number: Keep the mountain rescue number, 021 937 0300, on your phone.
- Check weather conditions: Strong winds and changing weather can affect hiking conditions and Cableway operations. Have an alternative plan if you intend to use the Cableway to descend.
- Pack essential supplies: Carry sufficient water, sun protection, snacks, warm clothing and a fully charged mobile phone. Starting early can also help hikers avoid the midday heat.
- Prevent fires: Fires and open flames are prohibited on the mountain. Smoke or flames should be reported immediately to 086 110 6417.
The R600 000 raised through the charity golf day will support the work of the volunteers who respond to emergencies throughout the year, particularly as increased visitor numbers and the summer fire season place additional demands on mountain safety services.
