Provincial emergency medical service (EMS) spokesman Robert McKenzie said the accident happened on an access road to Durban’s Ntuzuma area.
Crisis Medical spokesman Kyle van Reenen said one person was critically injured.
“Crisis Medical along with other emergency services arrived on [the] scene to find absolute mayhem as injured commuters struggled to free themselves from the badly wrecked taxi,” he said.
The cause of the crash was unclear and the subject of a police investigation.
