KNYSNA NEWS - For 36 hours, the Oakhill School Hall became a jungle, kitchen, workshop and dance studio as the learners raced against the clock to create six original theatrical productions.
The transformation was part of Oakhill's annual 36-hour Drama Festival, held from August 13 to 14, bringing learners from across the college together in a house competition between Millwood, Jubilee and Bendigo.
Each house produced a junior and senior play, and the learners were responsible for creating their productions from scratch. In just 36 hours, they had to write, direct, act, design sets, build props, manage lighting and choreograph their performances.
This year's theme was 'Animals', and a few unusual challenges were thrown into the mix. Every junior play had to feature a fresh pineapple, while the senior productions had to find a creative use for a camping chair. Each production also included a surprise appearance by a staff member.
The cameo roles produced some memorable moments, including the prep school teachers taking to the stage as an energetic white tiger and a surprisingly convincing sloth.
Grade 11 learner Taylor Kourie led the theatrical make-up, helping transform performers into gorillas, zebras, meerkats, crocodiles and other members of the animal kingdom.
Much of the action took place behind the scenes. Learners constructed zoo cages with cable ties, painted suspended clouds, rehearsed in hallways and operated technical desks - all while working against the 36-hour deadline.
With little time for second-guessing, the learners had to make quick decisions, solve problems and rely on one another. The older learners took on leadership roles, while the younger pupils discovered their talents both on and off the stage.
Although house points and awards were at stake, the festival also highlighted the college's collaborative spirit.
In just two days, an empty performance space was transformed into six different theatrical worlds, showcasing the creativity, courage and teamwork of Oakhill's learners.
