PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - The 10-day Plett Arts Festival came to an end on an encouraging note last weekend, with 126 artworks and creative pieces sold across two exhibitions hosted by the Plettenberg Bay Arts Association (PAA).
The sales were only part of the success, as exhibitors reached new audiences, making valuable connections and gaining opportunities to showcase their work at different stages of their creative journeys.
Community Canvas, held at the Piesang Valley Community Hall from 28 September to 4 October, provided an accessible platform for artists from Plettenberg Bay and surrounding areas.
The opening featured a special community moment as the Plett Pioneers Field Band marched from Barrington's down Piesang Valley Road to the community hall.
The initiative uses music and dance to teach life skills and create opportunities for young people. Just days later, the band travelled to Johannesburg to represent Plettenberg Bay at the Field Band Foundation National Championship on 3 October, competing against nine other bands from across South Africa.
Community Canvas recorded more than 100 sales and featured workshops, demonstrations and community art walls, bringing artists and residents together through creative activities.
The inaugural White House Collection offered a contrasting, professionally curated platform.
It attracted applications from 54 artists nationwide, and 22 were selected for the final collection by an independent judging panel. By the exhibition's end, 24 artworks had been sold.
PAA chairperson Jill Forbes said the exhibitions were designed to create opportunities for artists at different stages of their journeys, from first-time exhibitors to established professionals.
Funds raised through Community Canvas activities will support opportunities for young and emerging artists in the Bitou region, including materials, skills development and practical exhibition experience. The festival was supported by artists, volunteers, facilitators, sponsors, local businesses and the public.
For the PAA, the strong response has reinforced its commitment to growing a connected and supportive arts community in Plettenberg Bay and the wider Bitou region.
