Some of the world's most high-profile weddings, including those involving senior members of the British royal family, have taken place during the week.

For couples planning their own weddings, choosing a weekday can offer several practical advantages, from greater venue availability to potential savings.

“The idea that weddings have to happen on a Saturday is no longer set in stone,” says Onwaba Gonyora, director at KwaZulu-Natal wedding venue Brahman Hills.

“More couples exploring weekday celebrations are discovering that they offer the same magic, without many of the usual constraints.”

While Saturdays remain popular, Gonyora highlights five reasons couples could consider a midweek wedding.

1. More choice and less waiting

Finding a preferred date at a sought-after wedding venue can be challenging, with popular Saturday dates often booked months or even a year in advance.

Choosing a weekday can give couples more flexibility and potentially allow them to secure their preferred venue sooner.

For those planning destination weddings, this can be particularly useful, whether the date needs to accommodate work schedules, family commitments or travel arrangements.

2. Greater choice of suppliers

Popular wedding photographers, florists, musicians and celebrants can have busy weekend schedules, making it difficult to secure a particular supplier.

A weekday wedding may increase the chances of booking the professionals a couple has their heart set on, helping them create the celebration they have envisioned.

3. Potential savings

Cost is another consideration.

Some wedding venues and suppliers offer lower rates for weekday events, potentially allowing couples to make their budget stretch further.

Savings could instead be put towards aspects of the wedding that are more important to the couple, such as the menu, accommodation, décor or honeymoon.

However, couples should compare packages and obtain quotes before assuming that a weekday wedding will always be cheaper.

The biggest consideration for couples choosing a weekday wedding is their guests.

“The best wedding isn't defined by the day of the week; it's defined by the memories it creates,” Gonyora says.
