He dedicated his life to realise his, and millions of others’ ideal: "During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die."
Every year on Nelson Mandela Day (and throughout Mandela Month, July), local and international communities are encouraged to spend one minute for each of the years Madiba sacrificed in the liberation struggle, working for positive change in the same spirit of justice, equality, dignity and freedom that characterised Nelson Mandela’s life and work.
This year’s Nelson Mandela Month theme is, Take Action - Inspire Change - Make Every Day a Mandela Day.
