PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - With the tourism industry currently in a dire situation as a result of Covid-19 lockdown regulations, Plettenberg Bay locals have launched an initiative to assist those affected by it and hope to spread the idea across the country.
Cape Summer Villas, of which Sky Villa in Plett is a part, has launched an initiative dubbed the #TeeOfff4Tourism Golf Day.
Cape Summer Villas general manager Paul Duverge said the prime goal of the initiative is to raise funds for the procurement of food parcels for Plettenberg Bay hospitality workers.
"Many of them are sole breadwinners. With so much uncertainty surrounding the Temporary Employee Relief Scheme (Ters), many families within the sector are without an income - there is little to no work right now due to hospitality businesses being unable to open, while those that are trying to operate, have little to zero income due to restrictions on leisure travel and the prohibition of alcohol sales," Duverge said.
He believes it is important to add your voice to the collective of ever-growing awareness campaigns such as #ServeUsPlease, #Tourisminmyblood and #JobsSaveLives as a means to place a bit of pressure on the government to reopen the tourism sector.
They therefore decided to organise the golf day, scheduled for 8 August at the Goose Valley Country Club. "We're hoping that this golf day initiative of ours will gain momentum and will be picked up by others. We hereby challenge other companies, towns and provinces to start similar initiatives."
Duverge said they are in the process of approaching the greater business community for support by taking part in the day, sponsoring one of the 18 holes or sponsoring a prize. The cost of participating is R350 per player, which includes a halfway house as well as a goodie bag worth R250. "We hope to attract a minimum of 100 players."
He said that R150 of the ticket price will go towards Goose Valley for green fees, R50 will go towards a "thank-you pack" and R150 towards the food parcel fund.
Prizes for the day already include two five-night stays with the Cape Summer Villas Boutique collection to the value of R45 000 each. Other prizes include hotel and meal vouchers, and golf goodies. Prizes up to 20th place will be handed out on the day. For those interested in sponsoring a hole, the price is R2 500 per hole and will include a four-ball on the day.
