PLETTENBERGS BAY NEWS - The officially approved route for the inaugural Plett Street Mile will follow a horse-shoe track, taking in some of Plett's iconic features.
The race starts at the parking area of Robberg Beach 1, along Beacon Isle Drive into Odlands, and then turns towards Central Beach - and the finish. The flashing lights of security vehicles will precede the runners.
Well-known commentator Altus Schreuder will be calling the race.
The kudos for designing the mile course goes to John Gawler, one of the organisers.
Ray Wicksell, another organiser, is excited at the big names - past and current - who will attend the race on 20 December.
Legends
Legends like Johan Fourie and his wife Marinda will be attending, as well as world record holder Sydney Maree, who held the New York 5th Avenue Street mile for 37 years.
Others who will be attending, but not necessarily running, include marathon champion Elroy Galant from George, Jean and Alta Verster and Marius Hugo Schlechter, a Springbok middle-distance runner and the fastest miler on grass.
Big names among the runners include the African U23 sprint triathlon champion Matt van Coller, SA junior champion Werner Gouws, and Alri Verster, the SA junior 10km and 5km champion.
Cracker
Wicksell, a former sub-four-minute miler, said the iconic course will be flat and fast - and he believed the athletes should do some good times on it. "It's going to be a cracker of a race," he said.
