SEDGEFIELD NEWS - Quick thinking from a security officer, who was conducting her regular foot patrol on Thesen Island, led to a high speed chase through Sedgefield which ultimately saw four burglary suspects arrested last week.
One of these suspects was already a wanted man in Cape Town, to where he will return for processing.
In the late hours of the evening on Monday 20 January, an Allsound Security officer spotted a break-in in progress in Thesen Harbour Town and immediately called for backup from the control room.
While additional officers were responding, the suspects fled and jumped into their getaway vehicle, a white Mercedes Benz, and began making a getaway towards Sedgefield.
According to an Allsound statement, the suspects allegedly attempted to force the company's tactical vehicle off the road.
"Allsound controllers alerted an off-duty Allsound officer in Sedgefield who, in turn, alerted Sedgefield and Wilderness police," the statement read. "The suspect vehicle was travelling at high speed when it passed through Sedgefield and was seen turning off the N2 onto a dirt road just past Sedgefield.
"A police vehicle and the off-duty Allsound officer pursued and found the suspects' vehicle abandoned on the side of the road with the suspects gone to bush."
Once the law enforcement came to a stop in the area, police officers took control of the situation and brought four suspects out of the bushes. "Additional Allsound officers and police members from Knysna and Sedgefield arrived on scene and police took the four suspects into custody, and impounded the vehicle," the statement read.
The arrests happened once the clock struck midnight, on 21 January.
According to Southern Cape Police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies, the four suspects are aged between 26 and 36.
"Further investigation revealed that one of the accused, a 30-year-old man, was sought in Cape Town on other charges. He will be transferred later where he will be processed," Spies said of one of the suspects apprehended. He further pointed out that the suspects are set to appear in the Knysna Magistrate's Court on 3 February.
"The Knysna police station management commended the members and the security personnel from Allsound Security for their rapid response in this matter."
