KNYSNA NEWS - "I was exhilarated to be part of an orchestra again," smiled well-known Knysna resident, Ypie Kingma about the invitation to join the South Cape Symphony Orchestra as violinist for its performance, Last Night at the Proms.
On a recent visit to her home country, the Netherlands for the 35th anniversary and reunion of the Frisian Youth Orchestra, an orchestra she had joined as a 13-year-old girl, she was reminded of how much she enjoyed playing in bigger ensembles.
"I joined the Frisian Youth Orchestra almost 33 years ago and started at the 'bottom' of the third violins." She explained that the orchestra didn't have any violas at the time. "I worked my way up to the leader of the orchestra some five years later. During my time with the youth orchestra we gave regular concerts throughout the Netherlands and performed in Prague, Czechoslovakia, and Altea, Spain."
On Kingma's return from the reunion she contacted the conductor of the South Cape Orchestra, Niall Jack, who said that the orchestra was looking for violinists to join, and Kingma immediately started rehearsing. |
