3 attempted break-ins at same house

SEDGEFIELD NEWS - An allegedly known criminal in Sedgefield was apprehended at a home in Fish Eagle Street in the early hours of Saturday morning, February 4.

ADT security officer Elton Loggenberg was deployed to the house when the homeowner activated a panic alarm. The homeowner had woken to the sound of an unknown would-be intruder tampering with a window. A quick glance out the second-floor bathroom window confirmed that there was indeed a trespasser sneaking around the side of the house. The resident hit the silent panic button and kept quiet so as not to alert the male suspect, in his thirties.

Before searching the premises, Loggenberg cautioned the homeowner to remain inside the house. He then used his Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) - a wireless device that connects an officer to the ADT Security Control Room - to request back-up. While waiting for help to arrive, Loggenberg began scouring the area and found the suspect hiding in thick bushes.
He was handed over to police for arrest. According to ADT's report, the man is a suspect in various crimes in the town.

According to the Sedgefield Community Intelligence Centre (SCIC) the trespasser must have heard the ADT vehicle driving up the road, because he turned and fled. "He then ran across the road and tried to scale the neighbour's palisade fence, but the ADT security officer caught him and cuffed him. The police showed up about an hour later and the resident laid a complaint with them, and they took a statement," says Mike Hofhuis of SCIC.

ADT Security's branch manager for the Garden Route, Arno Hattingh, says all ADT Security officers are equipped with PDAs. "ADT Security's PDA system can be used for auto-dispatching or as a mobile communications device. In a situation like the one Loggenberg found himself in, time is of the essence and a PDA can make all the difference. Had he to return to his vehicle to call for back-up, the suspect may very well have escaped."

The Sedgefield community applauded Loggenberg for his brave and quick response.

This was the third attempted break-in at this residence in a single week. The previous weekend, in the early hours of Saturday morning, four suspects tried to break in through the upstairs bedroom window whilst the residents were sleeping. The residents awoke to see a hand reaching through the window and, after a loud scream, the suspects fled the premises. The following Sunday morning evidence was found to indicate that they had returned again during the previous night.

SCIC reports: "Other than the above, there were several reported attempted break-ins in the village, Sedgehill and Myoli Beach over this past weekend."

The media liaison for Knysna SAPS, Lt Sharon Damons has confirmed that a 32-year-old suspect, Siyabulela Nogwaza was arrested for trespassing by ADT Security and the police at approximately 03:30 on that Saturday morning at a residence in Fish Eagle Street. Nogwaza was released after admission of guilt and paying a fine for trespassing. Damons said the police were unable to make information available whether he was a wanted criminal or not.
