4 Boys in court for rape

Members of the ANC Women’s League have been following this court case since the beginning and supporting the community with placards of encouragement. They were, however, absent at court on Tuesday, April 18, but vowed that they would be there the next time, on May 18. Photo: Nwabisa Pondoyi.

KNYSNA NEWS FLASH - The case against four boys who allegedly raped a 15-year-old girl in White Location has been postponed by the Knysna Magistrate’s Court until May.

The boys, between 16 and 17 years old, appeared briefly in court on Tuesday, April 18, when local magistrate Zukiswa Thafeni requested that the matter be deferred until May 18 for further investigation.

The four minors were arrested on February 10 after they allegedly lured the girl into a house and repeatedly raped her.

During their court appearance on February 21, all four abandoned bail.

According to a family relative of one of the accused (name withheld), the four abandoned bail after receiving legal advice to do so, “because our legal representatives feared for the safety and the community marches.

“But seeing that the marches have somewhat died down, some of the parents are considering reapplying for bail,” the relative added.

Members of the ANC Women’s League (ANCWL), who were prominent at previous court appearances and organising marches with the community, were not present today.

ANCWL subregion chairperson Vinolia Gungubele said this was due to the fact that the matter wasn’t well communicated among ANCWL members, adding, “But on May 18, we’ll definitely be there in numbers.”
