PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - A second suspect has been arrested following the murder of a young Plettenberg Bay municipal law enforcement member.
Early on April 13 local detective Warrant Officer John Nomdoe apprehended the second suspect, a 16-year-old youngster, in the case that had rocked the close-knit community of the Crags.
The first suspect, 19-year-old Dillon Toll, was arrested on March 27 in Knysna upon his arrival from a visit to De Aar.
The two are accused of stabbing 20-year-old Franklin de Waal to death just a few metres from his home in the Crags. His body was found by a family member in Geelhout Street on February 14. He was stabbed in the chest and his cellphone was missing.
The murder sent shock waves through the community on the outskirts of Plettenberg Bay, and led to several protests by residents, including against police’s initial failure to arrest suspects they had claimed were responsible for the young man’s death.
Some of these protests turned violent when residents marched to the house of the two men they believed murdered De Waal, and plundered the property. Nine community members were arrested by public order police from Oudtshoorn on February 22 for public violence. They were subsequently released on R1 000 each.
Residents have however since said they felt vindicated now that the two men they initially identified, were the ones arrested by police.
The two suspects applied for bail on April 13, but proceedings were in camera as one of the suspects is a minor.
Judgment in the bail hearing was expected to take place on April 20, but the two had not yet appeared by the time of going to print.
