PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS FLASH - At 18:05 yesterday (October 23), NSRI Plettenberg Bay duty crew were activated following a request for assistance after a local man on Robberg Beach came upon the body of a man in shallow surf.
While calling emergency services he then reported that two female walkers on the beach also found the body of a female approximately 200 meters further along the beach in shallow surf.
NSRI Plettenberg Bay, the SA Police Services and Med-Life ambulance services responded.
On arrival on the scene CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) efforts were commenced on both persons but sadly despite extensive CPR efforts the NSRI doctor declared both persons deceased.
It has been confirmed that they are British citizens, a 28 year old male and a 26 year old female, on vacation. It is believed that they had gone to swim shortly after arriving in Plettenberg Bay on holiday.
It is suspected that they drowned. Sea conditions were rough with strong rip-currents in the vicinity. Police have opened an inquest docket and although no foul play is suspected the deaths are being investigated.
The bodies have been handed into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services.
British authorities are assisting with family abroad and emergency services and those involved have expressed sincerest condolences.
