The 22-year-old pleaded not guilty to murdering his parents and older brother at their De Zalze home more than two years ago.
His trial got underway in the Western Cape High Court on Monday.
His plea explanation was read out in court by his lawyer Pieter Botha.
In it, van Breda says police have prejudiced what he told them that morning when three of his family members were found axed to death.
He claims that at no point was he offered legal representation or told that what he had said would be used as evidence against him.
