Update: Escaped convict at large

KNYSNA NEWS - A dangerous convict, who is believed to have a history of house-breakings, escaped from the Knysna Correctional Services Facility on Sunday, August 2, and is still on the loose, but prison authorities will give very little information on what happened.

Police were seen hunting frantically for him in the bushes and banks of League Street, accompanied by Allsound Security officers, at midday on Sunday when he escaped.

The SAPS dog unit was deployed.

By Wednesday, August 5 at the time of going to press, police were still searching for the man identified as Nickroy November.

The Department of Correctional Services issued a brief statement on Monday, only confirming that November escaped from the Knysna Prison and that authorities were searching for him.

No further information was given, although information received by the Knysna-Plett Herald indicates that he escaped during visiting hours after getting a change of clothes from a visitor and then allegedly walking out with the visitor.

Carla Williams of the Western Cape Correctional Services regional office would not confirm this. In a final statement, she wrote, "An internal investigation is still continuing. We want to get to the bottom of this matter. If rumours are true, justice will take its course. We expect the outcomes of the investigation soon. We view the allegations in a serious light."
