She was bitten by two boerboels on May 21 while visiting family in Elarduspark, Pretoria and then began the nightmare, but the latest news received by the Knysna-Plett Herald from the family is positive.
Rodeom's mother, deputy mayor Esme Edge and her partner Julie Seton, said this week that they were totally "blown away by the level of support we have encountered from the entire Knysna Community".
They also want to say a special thanks to Angie Manser for starting the Facebook page, Support and Love for Nadine, from which they read to Nadine every day. "It has meant the world to her."
On Tuesday, June 2, Seton said: "Nadine is doing far better than expected. As a result of the level of care she received, she is out of danger unlike the nine-year-old who lost her leg.* The massive trauma causes enzymes to collect in the kidneys and it can lead to renal failure. Nadine's trauma was fortunately contained. She is doing amazingly well and we expect her to go to the step-down facility in the course of this week.
"Thereafter she can come home until her wounds have healed sufficiently for the stump to be prepared for, hopefully, a prosthesis and reconstruction, if necessary, on the rest of the bite marks on her body," said Seton.
Many Knysna residents know and love Rodeom who has worked at Knysna's Fruit & Veg City (Food Lovers Market) where she has been making orange juice for the past ten years.
The dogs who attacked Rodeom were removed from the property by police on Friday, May 29.
* On returning home from school, a nine-year-old Johannesburg school girl was attached by pit bull terriers usually kept in the garage on the property where she lived. Her leg was amputated in Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and her kidneys were failing.
