According to the Knysna municipal manager Grant Easton, the fire department was still fighting the blaze on Monday afternoon, as it was spreading along the vlei. “The fire department has managed to extinguish the fire on the jetty section and is trying to prevent it from spreading into the nearby forest.”
The Wilderness National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) was called to assist. "By fighting the fire from on the water, the NSRI was able to prevent the fire from crossing a strategic point in this outflanking firefighting manoeuvre while the firefighters fought the approaching fire head-on from the front,” said Sedgefield NSRI duty coxswain Garth Dominy.
