Eco Atlas a 110% Green flagship

Eco Atlas a 110% Green flagship
Rhian Berning and Helen Zille.
PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Eco Atlas, the brainchild of Plettenberg Bay's own eco-entrepreneur Rhian Berning, has been recognised as the latest flagship in the Western Cape Government's 110% Green initiative.

On Friday July 18, Berning received a flag acknowledging Eco Atlas' commitment from Western Cape Premier, Helen Zille, at a function at Spier in Cape Town.

This initiative defines a flagship as an organisation that has made more than the usual commitment towards building an economy that connects the well-being of the environment with the growth of the economy. Following evaluation of their submitted proposals, these organisations are selected as 110% Green flagship projects and become part of a dynamic network of flagship organisations, each committed to a project and required to act upon their commitment and report on their impact. The Western Cape Government views their commitment as an expression of co-responsibility by participants to contribute to building the green economy.

Zille has stated that it is a call for 110% commitment. "That is what is needed to make the paradigm shift to connect environmental preservation and economic growth. It is also a call for 10% impact – at the very least. 110% Green aims to be a catalyst to build a critical mass of activity that puts the Western Cape well on the road to becoming Africa’s green economic hub – a key economic goal of the Western Cape Government," Zille said, according to information about this project on the Western Cape Government's website.

At the launch in 2012, 30 organisations signed the 110% Green flag to establish themselves as the innovators and entrepreneurs of the green economy. Since then many more organisations have made the same commitment.
Eco Atlas is an ethical directory to accommodation, restaurants, activities, products and services in South Africa. It provides consumers and travelers with information empowering them to choose where to spend their money based on sound environmental and ethical practices.

Berning is committed to empowering people to make a positive impact by consciously choosing which practices to support when spending their money.
