Alleged repeat offender arrested
07:00 (GMT+2), Thu, 30 August 2012
KNYSNA NEWS - A blue Volkswagen Golf which was reported as stolen by its Hornlee, Knysna owner was found in Riviersonderend.

According to Constable Chris Spies, SAPS media liaison officer, the Vehicle Identification and Safegaurding Section based in George is investigating a case of theft of motor vehicle after the Golf was stolen in Botha Street, Hornlee in the early hours of Monday, August 21.

Spies said, " Information available indicates that the vehicle was parked on the street at the time of its disappearance. This vehicle was later found in Riviersonderend by members of the police."

"The circumstances surrounding this case are still under investigating," added Spies.

Two suspects from Knysna were arrested and are due to appear in court in Riviersonderend on unrelated charges today, Thursday, August 30. "The two suspects will be transferred to Knysna thereafter to face a charge of theft of motor vehicle. The suspects are being detained at Caledon," told Spies.

It has been alleged that other stolen items, including a big-screen television, were also found in the vehicle when the police arrested the suspects and retrieved the vehicle.

Spies was unable to confirm that the suspects were found with stolen property inside the vehicle.

According to unofficial information, the two suspects had damaged the stolen vehicle beyond recognition. The windows were smashed and one of the door handles was broken off. The owner of the car, who wishes to remain anonymous for fear of reprisal, said that she had all the damage to her car repaired.

According to a reliable source, the two suspects are known for many criminal activities and had been in prison several times for theft and other criminal offences. One of the suspects is allegedly the person who had recently led police to the remains of Emmerentia Witbooi. She had been murdered and her body found on Monday, August 6 (more than a week after her disappearance) behind a Telkom substation in the vicinity of Chapel Street, Hornlee. This suspect allegedly also admitted to having had sexual intercourse with the deceased on the night of her disappearance. The suspect was taken into custody for questioning but was later released.

Investigation into this matter continues.
