The World in Harmony
12:00 (GMT+2), Thu, 09 August 2012
KNYSNA NEWS - "I'd like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony…"

So sang the New Seekers in the 70s
Well, although most countries could do with some harmony right now, the Knysna Singers are not undertaking to teach the world, but they are offering local and visitors a chance to spend a relaxing hour or two enjoying beautiful songs from many different countries, nearly all sung in harmony and several in their original languages.

Close on the heels of the London Olympics, where countries are in serious competition with each other, the Knysna Singers will be waving their flags in a different spirit - that of unity and fellowship and, yes, harmony.

The World in Harmony programme contains well-known songs that represent the essence of the various countries' cultures such as Hava Nagilah from Israel, Kalinka from Russia, Plaisir d'Amour from France, Dein ist Mein Ganzes Herz from Germany and a fun arrangement of Java Jive from the land of the coffee bean.

Toto's arrangement of Africa and The Lion Sleeps Tonight are closer to home, while America is well represented with the likes of Marc Cohn's Walking in Memphis of 1990 and the Mamas and the Papas' version of California Dreamin' from the 60s. One of the highlights is sure to be Italian Salad, which is a send-up of an operatic chorus with tenor soloist - in this case the very popular Peter Southey who always brings the house down.

All in all, this will be an evening of entertainment and the programme has been put together to offer something for everyone.

The performances will be held in the DR Church hall in Knysna on Saturday, August 25 at 19:30 as well as Sunday, August 26 at 15:00.

Tickets cost R50 for adults and R20 for children under 12 and are available from Bloomers Florist in Woodmill Lane as well as Village Pharmacy in the West End Mall. For enquiries in Knysna, call 044 384 0924 or in Sedgefield, 072 348 1934.
