Bodyboards fly in Plettenberg Bay

PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS -The Southern Cape Bodyboarding Association (SCBA) held their third provincial trials of the year last Sunday at the Wedge in Plettenberg Bay when boards were flying in the surf.

The Wedge is known for its world-class wave that wedges off the rocks, given the right swell size and direction, to provide a perfect launch pad for bodyboarders. The day didn't disappoint, even in small but contestable 1m surf.

Some high performance riding from the Plettenberg Bay locals in the Boys Division saw the series' dominant rider, Johann Rademeyer (George), getting edged out early.

The three-men final eventually featured the local duo of John-Barry Coleman (Plettenberg Bay, 1st) and Andrew Searle (Plettenberg Bay, 2nd) who proved too strong for the only remaining outsider, Colin de Kock (George, 3rd).

Nikki Gericke (Plettenberg Bay, 1st) continued to show her class in the Ladies Division.

Plettenberg Bay locals also took full control of the finals in the Junior Division, with exceptional bodyboarding by Niklas Martin (Plettenberg Bay, 1st), Mike Searle (Plettenberg Bay, 2nd) and Leon Martin (Plettenberg Bay, 3rd). The prestigious Pro Division saw three riders pushing each other to the end. Both Niklas Martin (Plettenberg Bay, 2nd) and Tiaan Hoeben (George, 3rd) seemed to be in control of the final, but Mike Searle (Plettenberg Bay, 1st) turned the tables,
firing back rapidly with two high-scoring rides that also earned him the best score of the day - his two waves scoring a combined 15/20.

In the Mens Division, Francois de Kock (Herold's Bay, 1st) took the win from Vernon Deas (Herold's Bay, 2nd) and Dave Camacho (Herold's Bay, 3rd).

De Kock also took out the Dropknee Division.

The next two SCBA provincial trials will take place on 14 and 15 July. Competition and expectations are heating up, with only two trials left before the Southern Cape team is announced that will take part in the National Bodyboarding Championships during October.

Anyone interested in participating in the future trials or who want to enquire about sponsorship opportunities may contact Francois de Kock on 082 260 2887.
