Eden assists matrics
Principals from various regional schools listened attentively while Councillor Wessie van der Westhuizen addressed them recently.
EDEN DISTRICT NEWS - Eden Executive Mayor, Councillor Wessie van der Westhuizen and Speaker, Councillor Doris Nayler, handed over donations of R2 000 to principals of 10 regional high schools earlier this month.

This initiative emanated from school visits at the beginning of the school year during which the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and their delegation handed over certificates of acknowledgement to schools in the district to congratulate them on their outstanding performance in the 2011 matric examinations.

During a brief speech, Councillor van der Westhuizen thanked principals for attending the historic gathering. He explained that Eden Council needed to start with a new, fresh approach to better the lives of the communities. He further stated that by investing in education, much better and effective citizens with less social issues would be produced.

"R2 000 is not much, but we've decided to reach out and assist schools with special matric programmes. Maybe this donation can help you to buy food for Saturday classes or pay for motivation classes. We are not God, but if we can change the perception of one child or make a difference in a single child's life, we have already made a difference," were Councillor van der Westhuizen's sentiments.

The schools that received donations were Thembalethu Secondary School, Imizamo Yethu Secondary School, Ladismith Secondary School, Murray Secondary School, Kairos Secondary School, De Rust Secondary School, Percy Mdala Secondary School, Knysna Secondary School, Soa Brass Secondary and Hillcrest Secondary School.
