SOUTHERN CAPE NEWS - The Oudtshoorn Diocese will be holding a Rio Spring Carnival Dance on 1 September as a fundraiser for children who are going to the 27th World Youth Day (WYD) next year.

WYD will be held from 23 to 28 July next year in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. About 50 people from the Diocese, which stretches from Worcester to Plettenberg Bay and inland, have signed up to go. Funds have been raised for 10 underprivileged children in the Diocese who are accompanying the group. Money raised at the dance in September will be used to give yet another child the opportunity to attend WYD.

WYD started when about 300 000 young people met with the late Pope John Paul at St Peter's Square at the Vatican in 1984. In 1985 he announced the World Youth Day Institution. The first WYD was held in Buenos Aires, Argentinia in 1987. Other countries where it has been hosted include Spain, Poland, the Philippines, France, USA, Australia and Italy.

Hundreds of different nationalities attend WYD. The event consists of catechism, testimony, sharing, demonstration of love, a music festival and cultural activities.
