While the freezing temperatures, rain and strong winds sweeping through Bitou have not prevented voters from heading to the polls, most voting stations have experienced a slow start to the local government elections on August 3. At 14:00 – the halfway mark for voting – most voting stations have seen less than half of the registered voters in the various wards. Current councillor for Ward 4 in New Horizons and ANC candidate for the elections Hilda Plaatjies said they were expecting the majority of voters to start queuing from around 15:00, with indications that the weather should be clearing up. "There are also those who work despite it being a public holiday, so I think it will become a bit busier as the day goes on," Plaatjies said.
