The shark that beached on a sandbank near The Point on Saturday, March 11, died on Monday morning despite great efforts by the community to keep what is believed to be a young female alive. Owen Govender, senior section ranger for SANParks Lakes, confirmed on the afternoon of Monday, March 13, that the shark had died. "The whale shark was last seen in the Ashmead Channel near the SANParks offices this morning. This follows her ordeal in the estuary this weekend after the first rescue on Saturday morning," said Govender.
