On Friday, May 27 the staff, volunteers, founders and friends of Knysna-Sedgefield Hospice celebrated their 30th anniversary with an African themed cheese-and-wine evening. The organisation was started by Dr Joan Louwrens and Sister Sue Brukman, who recognised the need for palliative care within patients' homes. Together they recruited Sister Fiona Simpson and from then the organisation just grew and grew. The local Hospice now have seven professional nurses, two social workers, two social auxillary workers, one medical doctor (the chief executive), 30 community health workers, seven administrative staff and more than 200 volunteers on the team.
