On Thursday, November 12, Cape Nature issued a warning of a decaying whale carcass floating off Swartvlei Beach, Sedgefield. They reported that three large sharks were seen feeding off the carcass and warned bathers, surfers, paddlers and spear fishermen in the area to exercise caution when entering the water. The following day (November 13), the decomposed whale carcass washed up at the Swartvlei Beach next to the parking lot. The SANParks marine ranger for the Wilderness section of the Garden Route National Park Jonathan Britton and scientists spent Friday planning the best way to bury the whale on Saturday, November 14.
