A brave young couple, Riaan and Joanie van Straten, both teachers at Oakhill School refused to terminate a pregnancy after they were told that their baby girl had severe complications. Five weeks premature, Carli had to be relieved from her mother by caesarean at 34 weeks, weighing only 2.2kg and being only 45cm long. At 32 weeks she had stopped moving in Joanie's tummy and after a couple of scans and contact with specialists in Cape Town the couple had to make a dash to save her life, as Carli was compensating her own blood flow to other organs to help her heart.
